Background
Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership (CPLP) is an established leader in BC’s pulp and paper industry and
committed to its future. In support of this, it has established the “Canfor
Pulp Grants Program” to provide funding on a
continuing basis for research projects at The University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Northern BC (UNBC)
on topics of importance to it and the Industry generally.
Program Objectives
The aims of the Program are to:
- provide cost effective support for collaborative research projects of interest to CPLP
- attract and train excellent students
- assist UNBC and UBC faculty in leveraging funding from government sources
- promote closer links between UNBC, UBC and CPLP
Program Funding
- The goal of the program is to award one research project per year (see Selection Procedure below).
- The program will provide $75,000 per project awarded, paid out over three years. The awards
will be in the form of grants-in-aid (GIA’s) in accordance with the terms and conditions applicable at the
university in question.
- The program funding will be available to support research projects at UBC and UNBC.
- If overhead applies, it is to be drawn from the awarded amount and is the
responsibility of the grant recipient to meet university requirements from the funds granted.
- If there are no suitable projects proposed in any given year, an award will not be made.
- CPLP anticipates that this will be an on-going program, but in the event it must be terminated,
CPLP commits to completing the funding of grants then in place.
Award Selection Procedure
Announcements
Calls for proposals will be issued on a yearly basis. Announcements of deadlines, priorities for funding, submission
procedures, and other information will be posted on a dedicated web site. Announcements of new postings will be
communicated to UNBC and UBC who will be responsible for disseminating this information to their interested faculty.
Criteria for Selection
Grants will be awarded on the basis of a proposal from faculty members for a three-year period. Proposals may be
submitted by faculty on a topic addressing strategic objectives of CPLP identified in calls for proposals, or on a
topic of their choosing. Priority will be given to the former.
Criteria for selection will be the track record of the researcher, the match of the proposed research with
general objectives described above and priority areas of interest identified by CPLP.
A key requirement will be that faculty obtain matching funds to the CPLP
grant from NSERC or other sources.
A yearly report on the progress of the research will be expected.
Submission of Proposals
Proposal submission requirements are given in Calls for Proposals.
Selection Committee
A Selection Committee appointed by CPLP and chaired by the Director of Research, Canfor Pulp Innovation will decide the awards.
